The United Nations and several countries, including Brazil, have warned of the humanitarian consequences of a military operation of this magnitude. Senior officials in Israel said an invasion could occur during Ramadan, a holy period for Muslims that begins in 10 days, if Hamas does not release the Israeli hostages still under its control. One of the hostages is believed to be Michel Nisenbaum, 59, of BrazilianIsraeli descent.
That same Saturday, thousands of protesters arrived in Jerusalem after a fourday march demanding the release of hostages in Palestine.
