The court in Rio de Janeiro ordered the confiscation of the amounts from the sale of books by Olavo de Carvalho, considered the “guru of the Brazilian right” and a prominent figure of Bolsonarism. The aim of the measure is to ensure the payment of compensation to Caetano Veloso arising from the unfounded allegations of pedophilia made by Olavo before his death in 2022.
Olavo de Carvalho was ordered to pay R$ 40,000 to Caetano Veloso for moral damages, an amount that, updated in 2022, amounted to R$ 3,372,608.33 due to failure to comply with the court order to remove the offending posts, subject to a daily fine. The current decision focuses on Editora Record, responsible for publishing the author's books, which stated that it received R$ 8,016.40 from the sales of Olavo's works.
Impact on the estate of Olavo de Carvalho
Judge Guilherme Pedrosa Lopes of the 50th Civil Court also emphasized that, pending the completion of the inventory of Olavo de Carvalho, his assets must be used to pay off the debts incurred, including the lawsuit filed by Caetano Veloso. Therefore, the proceeds from the sale of his books and real estate will now be used to comply with the judgment in favor of the Brazilian composer.
