The famous photo of the Times Square kiss at the end of World War II was briefly banned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs because the hug was “non-consensual” and a violation, according to a senior official. the internal zero-tolerance rules towards sexual harassment”.
Some employees complained, said the proposal's author, Deputy Undersecretary RimaAnn Nelson, and suggested removing the photo from the department's walls. The censorship was promptly intercepted by the White House and returned to sender, and the image remained in place. The photo, signed by Alfred Eisenstaedt, shows an American sailor kissing a nurse in the heart of Times Square during celebrations of Japan's surrender in August 1945.
