Globo actress was beaten in the street for a character
The life of actors and actresses is not as easy as people think. With fame come big problems. When people take a villain’s hatred into real life, things can get out of control. Such is the case of Léa Garcia, who was the antagonist in Escrava Isaura (1976), a globo story written by Gilberto Braga (19452021).
In an interview with Pedro Bial, Léa commented on some episodes where she was attacked in the street because of Rosa’s evildoing against Isaura (Lucélia Santos). “Is it true that you were attacked on the street because of this character?” asked the journalist. “Several times. I was hit a lot,” confirmed the former Globo actress.
“I am a woman who likes to do fairs and markets. So when I lived in Flamengo, I went to the fair [bairro do Rio de Janeiro]. A creature caught a huge fish and slapped me on the back for “being mean to Isaura”. I got hit too… It took a pinch of tears to get out of my eyes. I was waiting on Flamengo beach for a taxi to go to my cousin’s house,” she recalled.
Léa Garcia has also been publicly booed for the Globo character. “Another time, which was very funny, I was with Haroldo de Oliveira [19422003], who played André in the soap opera… We watched carnival, we wore our Globo badges, walked around… Eventually Haroldo stood in the middle of the catwalk and started to give his speech. Then the entire audience booed. A villain, a bastard. That was a nice joke,” revealed Léa.
Despite the aggression, she explains that this is a reflection of good performance. “At a certain point I started to like it. And I consider this work my calling card on television.”
