Cardinals vs. Mets May 16 game postponed

NEW YORK — With thunderstorms scattered throughout the tri-state area Monday, the Mets postponed their series opener against the Cardinals. The game will be rescheduled as part of a single-admission doubleheader beginning Tuesday at 3:10 p.m. ET.

Though the doubleheader doesn’t allow the Mets to meaningfully change their pitching plans, they can call in an extra pitcher Tuesday to provide bulk innings for one of the games. The team tentatively plans to start Trevor Williams in Game 1 of the doubleheader and Taijuan Walker in Game 2. Williams is only stretched out enough to throw about 65 pitches, making the 27th man a significant addition. The Mets will have that pitcher available for both games.

Tylor Megill was originally scheduled to start Monday’s opening game against the Cardinals but was placed on the injured list over the weekend with right biceps tendinitis. The Mets may eventually call leftist David Peterson to replace him in the rotation, but Peterson won’t be fully rested until Wednesday. (He wouldn’t join the rotation until Saturday in Denver at the earliest.) Meanwhile, Williams will play an important role.

The doubleheader is the Mets’ fourth this season. Game 2 starts about 30-40 minutes after Game 1 ends.

Fans with tickets for the game originally scheduled for Monday may not use them to enter Tuesday’s doubleheader. They will instead receive a coupon redeemable for one other Mets home game, excluding July 9 (Keith Hernandez’ number retirement), July 26-27 (Subway Series), and August 27 (Old-Timers’ days).

Fans with tickets for the originally scheduled game on Tuesday can use them for the entire doubleheader.
