Impossible to have any idea of the status of the jury deliberations at Carl Girouard’s trial. After beginning their deliberations on Monday lunchtime and coming forward a few hours later for a summary of the judge’s instructions, they went into isolation without making a new request to the judge since.
They must unanimously agree on one of four verdicts determined by the judge, namely verdict of non-criminal insanity or even manslaughter, second-degree murder, or first-degree murder.
The jury members deliberate together from 9 am to 5 pm in a dedicated room at the Quebec Courthouse, after which they are transferred to a Quebec hotel to spend the night without communication.
Carl Girouard is accused of the murders of François Duchesne and Suzanne Clermont and five attempted murders that took place on the streets of Old Quebec on October 31, 2020. His attorney, Me Pierre Gagnon, introduced veteran psychiatrist Gilles Chamberland to try to convince the jury that the 26-year-old defendant was in the midst of a psychotic delirium at the time of the crimes.
