The demonstration brought together thousands of students in Plaza Indoamérica in front of the headquarters of the Central University of Ecuador.
The young people marched accompanied by placards expressing their support for the National Union of Educators (UNE) hunger strike and calling for equal pay contained in the reforms of the Organic Law of Intercultural Education (LOEI).
They also asked the national government to adequately budget the sector and ensure quality education.
The march led from the Student Center to the Constitutional Court, where more than a dozen teachers are on strike awaiting the LOEI President’s veto.
According to President Guillermo Lasso, the regulation is unconstitutional, which is why he condemned it in its entirety last April.
However, the UNE maintains that there is no irregularity in the regulation and stresses the existence of the funds needed to increase the salaries of public teachers, which has been requested for years.
To validate their arguments, the organization has provided reports showing that the offset resources may come from oil sales or tax collections.
In this regard, they assert that from January to April of this year alone, the state received more than six thousand 653 million dollars, which more than covers the required amount.
The protesters claim the problem is the national government’s lack of political will to address sectors such as education and health.
Among the strikers in the capital are UNE President Isabel Vargas and FEUE President Mauricio Chiluisa.
