The Dominican Republic joins the list of countries introducing free visas for Cuban travelers who are in transit on its territory.
Recently, the immigration authorities of the Dominican Republic announced an adjustment of their visa policy towards travelers from Cuba. Apparently, it consists in the exemption from the visa procedure for those Cubans planning a stopover in this country.
First of all, let’s recall that until now this country has required the Antilles to issue a permit for their stay, no matter how short, on its territory. Therefore, those who planned a stopover in this country when traveling, required this document imperatively; otherwise they could not continue their journey.
However, the Resolution 09-2022 of the Directorate General for Migration announced on May 12 creates a new flexibility. Consequently, according to this document, Cubans traveling to the Dominican Republic who meet certain requirements can obtain a free visa.
Conditions of the free visa for Cubans in transit in the Dominican Republic
According to the above document, Cuban passengers transiting the Dominican Republic are guaranteed a free visa. However, they also warn that the traveler must meet certain conditions in order to be approved for entry.

First, it is important for the passenger to prove that their stay in that country is for a stopover. You must therefore prove that you have purchased a ticket when traveling to a third country.
In order to be authorized to enter the Dominican Republic on a free transit visa, Cubans must keep their travel documents in order. With this in mind, the Dominican immigration authorities will verify that the traveler has the visa that allows entry to the next destination.
Therefore, if the traveler does not have an entry permit for the country where his next flight is scheduled, he will not be able to make his stopover in the Dominican Republic. Apparently, this condition is intended to prevent Cubans from being sent back to the Dominican Republic from the next destination. This will prevent these people from returning to this country and being stranded in an irregular situation.
It should also be noted that this policy only applies to Cubans residing in Cuba. However, different conditions apply to travelers who are legal residents of other countries.
