Warner Brazzers.’ Batman, as expected, leads the weekend at the box office and is expected to be a #1 three-shot series with a very good retention of -51% and $66 million, which is close to $238.5 million by Sunday. Already directed by Matt Reeves, the film is worth over $400 million. Earned $18.7 million yesterday, down 47% from last Friday (-67% when compared to the first Friday + preview).
This outperforms previous DC films in the second weekend of Batman v Superman (-69%), The Dark Knight Rises (-61%), Justice League (-56%) and The Dark Knight (- 53%).
RelishMix took notice of the post-social chatter about the DC film, saying it was “positive as doubts are dispelled by the cast’s choice of applauding Robert Pattinson’s performance as the best performance of Batman of all time, while fans continue to adore Nirvana’s music in the film. that was the inspiration for Matt Reeves when he wrote the script for the film.” YouTube videos were the most seen on social media, adding 20.6 million views for in-house and studio-earned content in a week. The film’s official social pages have added 282k new fans, especially on Instagram, and the Twitter and Facebook pages now total 1.3 million for Batman.
Zoë Kravitz’s super-Instagram has grown to 7.4 million fans, adding 617k fans in a week with images from Ellen Von Unwerth Wonderland’s spicy new photo magazine featuring portraits of the actress and Pattinson. As an added incentive to promote the picture in theaters, Kravitz hosts SNL tonight.
Disney “Blushing”
Even though the pandemic has subsided and mask requirements have been eased in Los Angeles and New York, the middle of the box office is filled with holdovers; Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Still Aiming At $800M But Will Be Worth $792.2M By Sunday After Weekend 13 Of $4M, -11% And Theatrical Bookings Of 2,702 Seats . Such a theatrical delay would be the envy of any rival distributor three months after the film’s release.
Please note that if Disney left Pixar’s Turning Red in theaters this weekend, it could possibly make $20-30M+, at least securing most of the dollars for exhibitors this weekend. True, you might argue that the studio didn’t know how long Omicron would last, but we got Sing 2, which is still in the top 10 box office 12 weekends after its $1.55 million release. Come on, Disney, you know families go to the theater.
Here’s another interesting takeaway from Turning Red: I was told that when Netflix launches a show or movie (outside of their top awards season), they spend a very frugal amount of money relying straight on their subscriber menu to launch the title. But in Disney’s case with Turning Red, they forked out the picture like it was a major theatrical release. Why? Chances are the marketing money has already been there and accounted for, but it’s also coveted by Disney+ subscribers. The social media bombardment of Turning Red’s ads is arguably in line with what Lionsgate was pushing for Moonfall (and that studio did push that movie).
iSpot reveals that Disney has spent $23 million on American TV spots. That’s the same amount they spent on Black Widow and more than Jungle Cruise ($19.5M), Cruella ($12.6M), and what Netflix spent on Red Notices ($3.3 million), the streamer’s most watched movie.
Disney aired commercials during the Winter Olympics, Big City Green Cities, A Wonderful Tale of Ladybug and Noir, The Bachelor, and Good Morning America. iSpot reports that Turning Red’s trailer has been the 16th most viewed trailer on all of TV since February 21st. Why didn’t Disney leave this movie in theaters?? Again, they need Disney+ subscribers given the billions they spend on streaming programming that isn’t going through the pipeline as fast as it should.
Overall, ticket sales for the weekend are $95 million, down 43% from last weekend and down 55% from the same weekend in 2019; it was when Disney had Captain Marvel that boosted all ticket sales for that weekend to $210 million.
