Iranian General Soleimani was killed when a US MQ-9 Reaper drone fired missiles at his convoy as it left Baghdad airport in 2020.

Soleimani was the head of Iran’s al-Quds division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was seen as responsible for Tehran’s support for Shiite proxies that are causing unrest in the Middle East.

He was often called the most powerful figure in the country after its supreme leader.

After his death, a UN expert stated that without an immediate threat to life, the strike was illegal.
