US sends out invites to America Summit with no definitive list Spain

Washington, 20 May (EFE) .- The United States has already started sending out invitations to the Summit of the Americas, but does not rule out expanding the list of guests for the event, said State Department spokesman Ned Price. on Friday.

The spokesman confirmed that the first messages were sent out on Thursday, but did not say which countries they had been sent to so far, and clarified that the final list would not be published “until all invitations have been sent”.

The comments come amid controversy over the apparent exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the summit and calls by Mexican President Andés Manuel López Obrador to boycott it.

The Mexican President announced that he will not attend the event, which will be held in early June in the city of Los Angeles (California) if these three countries are excluded.

The President of Bolivia Luis Arce made a similar announcement, while the Presidents of Argentina Alberto Fernández; from Chile, Gabriel Boric, and from Honduras, Xiomara Castro, did not exclude their participation but requested that no one be excluded.

While Price declined to identify the guests at the event, the spokesperson noted that in addition to heads of state and government officials, “civil society leaders and businesspeople from the (Western) hemisphere” would be attending.

“We are confident that the summit will bring together thousands of people to discuss some of the most important common challenges and opportunities,” he said.

Among these challenges, the speaker particularly highlighted migration and climate change.
