Director Roberto Andò signs this mini-series in two episodes dedicated to one of the greatest photographers of our time, Letizia Battaglia, who died on April 13, 2022. Her black-and-white photos tell of the long ordeal of Palermo besieged by the mafia, the horrific massacre in which Cosa Nostra killed police officers, judges and defenseless citizens during the most heinous thirty years of our republican history. Few know that this great witness of our time also had an extraordinarily dramatic biography, as a child, as a young man and then as an adult, and that her brave and unconventional existence vividly narrates the great struggles of women in the last century to conquer dignity and freedom. A fascinating, adventurous, amazing life. A life full of battles fought in the trenches, in a professional reality always male, like that of the news photojournalists of those years. The only woman among the male colleagues, Letizia manages to give her an expression of compassion and beauty, turning photography into a weapon to change the world. In consultation with Letizia and with her collaboration, Roberto Andò decided to turn this extraordinary human and professional story into a television story. In the miniseries, framed by his lens, mafia members, poor people, girls, great figures of our civil and cultural history, such as Falcone himself, Leonardo Sciascia, Pier Paolo Pasolini, pass by. DIRECTOR’S NOTES I met Letizia Battaglia forty years ago at the height of her career as a photographer for L’Ora newspaper. Since then she has become a fundamental friend. I consider his photographs an amazing human and artistic testimony and at the same time a work of civilization. And I think his life is one of the most breathtaking stories I’ve ever heard. Her personal story tells of a woman who rebels against the fate of a submissive daughter and an oppressed wife, turning into a fighter who, in fifty years of activity, has fought with tenacity and courage thanks to the enormous talent that has been found in the work for the L “The Ora newspaper is recognized as one of the greatest photographers in the world (it is no coincidence that the New York Times included her profile among the eleven most representative women in the world in 2017). In the overwhelming novel that is the life of Letizia, the characters of an extraordinary personality mingle: independence, eroticism, courage, talent.
