A 23-year-old man is dead and a 22-year-old woman hospitalized after their jet ski overturned and crashed in the Hudson River on Saturday, police officers say.

The incident happened around 7:20 p.m. in the water near Battery Place and Vesey Street, just off the southern tip of Manhattan, police said.

The couple, who have yet to be identified, had reportedly rented the watercraft from a jet ski service across the river in Hoboken on what was an unseasonably hot May day before it overturned in the water, police officers say.

The force of the impact immediately threw both riders into the river, where the current caught them and carried them downstream.

Lawyers said the couple had been driving at high speeds leading up to the accident but did not specify exactly what caused the accident when asked by .

However, police said the woman – who police said rode as a passenger – drifted as far as the Brookfield Place Ferry Terminal north of Battery Park before being tracked down by the jet ski service’s tour guide.

The employee then directed the woman to a ladder on one of the terminal’s docks so she could lift herself out of the water.

The woman was able to get to safety, police said Saturday, after spending just minutes in the river. The Hudson is known for its strong, unpredictable undercurrents, especially during the warmer months of the year.

The woman was then taken to New York Downtown Hospital, where she is currently recovering in stable condition, police officers said.

However, her partner – reportedly the woman’s boyfriend – was not so lucky and was not immediately recovered by emergency services after he was pulled under the terminal by the current.

Police were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. after both drivers were thrown into the water near Battery Place and Vesey Street, where the current overtook them and carried them downstream. The woman was pulled out of the water shortly after, while the man was not recovered until 10:30 p.m

The NYPD and FDNY then deployed a massive search party of divers, boats and helicopters to track down the man who piloted the jet ski.

After a search of around three hours, the police officers were able to locate the man and pulled his body out of the water around 10:30 p.m. about 150 meters south of the terminal. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police are currently investigating the incident. They have yet to figure out how the man lost control of the jet ski.
