MEXICO CITY, May 22 (EFE) .- The Covid-19 pandemic in Mexico, which has left more than 300,000 official deaths, is not over yet, contrary to the assumptions of the health authorities and even the bad The management of the health emergency could be a new one Variant open the door, as the microbiologist Laurie Ann Ximénez-Fyvie explains in her book “The lives that does not count”.

“The Covid 19 pandemic is not over yet and the phase seems to be adjusting to the introduction of a new variant,” said the specialist in an interview with Efe.

In his book, Ximénez-Fyvie once again critically analyzes the way the Mexican government has managed the pandemic and it is a sequel to his first publication “The Damage Cannot Be Repaired” (2021).

In the text, he describes in detail what the actions of the leaders and the behavior of the citizens were like during the second wave that took place in Mexico between December 2020 and January 2021 and which claimed many more lives than the first.

“What we’re seeing is that despite the situation experienced in the first wave, our health officials don’t appear to have learned anything,” he said.

Ximénez Fyvie explained that his text allowed him to go deeper into the fact that the Mexican government’s containment measures were “insufficient” and that the reported numbers were not real.

Through the voice of patients, family members who have lost a loved one during this time, and doctors who have experienced firsthand the difficulties of caring for and the deaths of people, even close to them, the specialist provides an overview of the Tragedy in Mexico, one of the countries with the highest number of deaths from Covid-19 worldwide.

MORTALITY HIGHER THAN OFFICIAL FIGURES

One of the issues raised in the book is that the Mexican authorities have done everything they can to “catch up” on the real death toll left by the pandemic.

“The deaths were not hushed up, but the numbers were not admitted as such,” he said.

The expert notes in her book that the mortality figures recognized by the Mexican government are currently barely over 324,000 people, but the reality is much worse.

“The official figure continues to reflect more or less 2.5 times fewer deaths than actually occurred due to the pandemic,” he said.

However, he regretted that these figures, known as excess mortality, are poorly reported by the media.

A REFLECTION OF THE VIACRUCIS

In the book, Ximénez-Fyvie tells of the problems that doctors, Covid-19 patients and their families faced when they tried to save the lives of their loved ones by using – often unsuccessfully – both public and public hospitals looking for a bed. while, in their opinion, the health authorities gave the wrong message.

“The federal government’s position was that beds were available in the health centers to accommodate patients, so the recommendation was to stay at home when it should have been to provide medical care before cases got complicated,” he stressed .

And he criticized that the hygiene measures were influenced by the political vision of the health authorities.

“Decisions have been made with the political elections in our country and we are not the only ones, many countries have done so. Today it is estimated that in reality between 14 and 18 million people have died from this pandemic worldwide,” he explained.

He also explained that despite the fact that health leaders in Mexico have assumed that the pandemic is “going out” in Mexico, the reality is not, especially since the Omicron variant has diversified into many subvariants.

“It is nonsense that the government is proposing the end of the pandemic. Hopefully this doesn’t result in a major loss of life,” he warned.

He recalled that Mexico is one of the countries with the worst indicators of the pandemic, registering more than 324,000 deaths in official figures.

“In absolute terms we are fifth in the world, in excess mortality the last report put us fourth with 798,000 excess deaths, we are the country with the most orphans, with 192,000 orphans reported up to last year, the country with most of the health workers who have died from the pandemic,” he stressed.

And he recalled that not even the World Health Organization (WHO) has closed the health crisis, which totals more than 5.7 million infections in Mexico.

He reiterated that the pandemic is still active, “whatever President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion Hugo López-Gatell say, they can say without any scientific evidence, without any solid basis, that they are decreing this will be the end of the pandemic, but it will continue,” he stressed.

Recalling the situation in China and Europe, regions where contagion is peaking, he said, “We are in a period of slower rates of contagion in most of the world.”

And he said this is serious because it gives the government the justification to be even more opaque on information about vaccinations and deaths.

“We are the only country in the world that has made this decision. We need to expand vaccination coverage, continue using face masks and ventilating rooms,” he concluded. EFE
