After both men birdied in overtime on their first round, the winner took a lead with a par 4 shot at the second extra hole, the 17th flag. His rival had to settle for par here after failing to hit the green with his tee shot.
Thomas won with a par on the 18th hole, the third and final overtime hole. He won his second career major title. He had triumphed at the 2017 edition of the PGA Championship, held in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After the four rounds of regulation, Zatoris and Thomas were tied with a cumulative 275 (-5). They dealt cards of 71 (+1) and 67 (-3) respectively in the fourth round.
Returning to Pereira, he was in control after 54 holes with a three-stroke lead. The 27-year-old missed his chances with a double bogey on the 18th pennant. He also sent his tee shot into the water. He also missed a birdie by a few millimeters on the previous hole. On Sunday, the Chilean shot 75 (+5) and finished third with a cumulative 276 (-4) – level on points with American Cameron Young.
Pereira missed a chance to become the first golfer to win a Grand Slam in his first season on the PGA Tour since Keegan Bradley in 2011.
The only Canadian to contend for the weekend rounds, Adam Hadwin, finished tied with three opponents in 71st place. He shot 73 (+3) for his final round and finished his work week with a total of 292 (+12) shots.
