World Economic Forum Returns to Davos; Guedes has an agenda on Monday

In the heart of the Swiss Alps, this weekend the city of Davos has started to welcome the 2,500 participants of the World Economic Forum, which is returning in person after two years of the pandemic. The official opening will take place this Sunday with a dinner hosted by Klaus Schwab, the founder and current chairman of the organization organizing the event.

It is expected that 50 heads of state will be received, but the most expected will not be in person. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky will speak via video starting at 6:15 a.m. (GMT) in a conversation led by Schwab but his economy minister, Serhiy Marchenko, will travel to Davos for some events.

Ukraine, which has been at war for longer than expected and is having geopolitical implications for Europe and the world, will be the subject not only of official events within the framework of the forum, but also of parallel meetings in the city’s hotels.

One of them is about the reconstruction plan of Ukraine, in which Marchenko and also the mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko will take part. On Sunday evening, five Ukrainian MPs will take part in a panel to discuss the country’s resistance to the Russian invasion. For almost three months, the conflict against the Russians has been devastating the Ukrainian economy and increasing world inflation.

Another anticipated event is the participation of veteran Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State of the United States, in a talk moderated by Schwab.

Agenda: World Economic Forum

In this issue, Brazil is one of the countries and regions with exclusive panels, along with Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and the European Union.

Brazil is represented by Economy Minister Paulo Guedes and his agenda includes meetings on Sustainable Growth, Economic Partnerships with Asia and the Pacific, Outlook for the Global Economic Situation and Economic Partnerships in Latin America.

“Guedes will present Brazil as a preferred destination for investments and as a preeminent country for international energy and food safety solutions,” the Ministry of Economy said in a statement.

Paulo Guedes in Davos

Economy Minister Paulo Guedes will meet in Davos with Martin Escobari, copresident of manager General Atlantic and head of Latin America operations for the $86 billion private equity fund.

The meeting with Escobari is scheduled for this Monday (23rd) at 19:00 local time (14:00 GMT). General Atlantic has regularly invested in Brazil and is one of the shareholders of the digital bank Neon. Last week, the company bought a block of Locaweb shares at an auction on B3.

After Escobari, Guedes attends a BTG Pactual Dinner taking place in a hotel parallel to the World Economic Forum. Banker André Esteves, who returned to the bank’s board of directors in April, is taking part in the event.

In Davos, Guedes will also take part in two debates at the forum, one on Tuesday (24) on ESG (an acronym for governance, social and environmental practices) and one on Wednesday (25) on the increase in global debt.

security

Unlike other years, this edition does not take place in January when the region is snowy, but the strong security in the central streets, some of which are closed with concrete structures and the patrol of several vehicles, is similar.

Only public transport and the big dark cars of the delegations are still in circulation. Only those who have the ID stay on the street in front of the congress venue.

Despite all the reinforcements, there are no protesters in the city, as there have been at previous editions of the event, which brings heads of state, economists and businessmen from all over the world to the Swiss Alps.

In times of a pandemic, the forum required a pretest for all attendees and a new test every 24 hours, conducted at two centers around the convention site.

The test result is linked to the ID card, ie if the result is positive, access is denied. (With Estadão content)
