Middle East Summary, May 22, 2022-.

At least one person was injured in an explosion in this capital in front of a hotel complex in Kabulsaid Khalid Zadran, a spokesman for the Afghan police.

The deflagration happened as a ceremony honoring former Taliban leader Akhtar Mohammad Mansour was being held at the Istiqlal Hotel to mark the sixth anniversary of his death, the source said. Security forces in the area are investigating the causes of the event, Zadran added.

Akhtar Mohammad Mansour died in 2016 after a US military drone strike. The former Afghan leader took over leadership of the Taliban in July 2015, replacing the movement’s founder, Mohamed Omar.

After Mansour’s death was confirmed, then-US Secretary of State Johh Kerry indicated that the Taliban chief had become a “constant and imminent threat to the northern country”.
