Everyone should have a best friend that they would choose as a bridesmaid, and everyone should have a best friend that they would choose as a bridesmaid… except you, because they know all your secrets.
This week, that woman is Saturday Night Live guest host Zoe Kravitz.
In one of the week’s early sketches, Kravitz played Sarah, the bride’s best friend, who accidentally tells her new hubby what he’s gotten himself into.
Cecily Strong plays the bride, Tanya, and Kyle Mooney plays Matt, the groom who soon realizes he’s been over his head. A slightly tipsy Sarah starts by listing the things we “all” do – allow drunk driving, see your friend’s father naked, kill someone – but then starts to really get into the dark stuff.
The reason why Tanya is the Bride is wildly out of place and very funny. The list of Jackass guys she’s slept with is… long. You might not know that you can find dates on an app called Choke Pony, but this sketch is here to teach you.
In some ways, Kravitz’s character is very similar to another character Strong is known for: The girl you wouldn’t want to start a conversation with at a party. It’s not as edgy as that major weekend update, but they both exude a sense of pure chaos, which is great fun in a stuffy environment like a wedding.
Mooney plays a more subdued version of her standard lovable loser persona that goes well with Strong’s fiancée. He gets a couple of repeated lines: “What kind of dancing?” and “What kids?” is the basis of what would otherwise be a very stupid sketch. It’s only a pity that he got involved with the Suge Knight woman.
