The Toronto Blue Jays lost their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 in the 10th inning at Busch Stadium on Monday after a terrific Grand Slam by Paul Goldschmidt.
Visitors’ aide David Phelps recorded the first two outs of the 10th inning before allowing a walk. He then gave way to Ryan Borucki, who loaded the bases by leading the first batter to him. Goldschmidt then delivered the knockout punch by kicking the ball wide. The defeat also went to Phelps’ record (0:1).
Jay’s starting pitcher Jose Berrios didn’t have his best start to the season, allowing three runs with seven hits in six and a half innings. However, he managed seven strikeouts.
hitting problems
Again this year, the Jays couldn’t hit the ball properly. They only hit the ball four times safely. In fact, two of their runs came after being awarded walks when bases loaded in the seventh inning.
George Springer hit the only productive hit, a sixth-round solo homer at bat.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Teoscar Hernandez were all unable to score as they scored back-to-back in manager Charlie Montoyo’s rotation.
The Blue Jays have an opportunity Tuesday to regroup and level the streak before heading to Los Angeles to face the Angels.
