A British businessman was gunned down in front of his 14-year-old daughter over the weekend in what Mexican authorities are calling a “targeted attack.”
Chris Cleave, a 54-year-old real estate agent from Cornwall, was gunned down in Cancun on Saturday while driving through the popular tourist spot with his teenage daughter, according to a Daily Mail report.
Authorities said the gunmen fled the scene on a motorcycle but were later detained by police.
Police said the killers followed Cleve, who had lived in Mexico for nearly a decade after moving from the UK, after he left his home that morning, the Mail reported.
“This was not an accidental shooting, but a targeted attack,” a police source told the publication. “He was chosen to be killed.”
Police have yet to determine a motive for the fatal attack, but investigators are investigating a ominous message left by drug dealers earlier this month threatening the owners of a local upscale restaurant.
In the message, the gang, who allegedly sought to sell drugs at the diner, wrote: “We’re coming for you.” The note ended with the words: “And you, Chris, in a red Audi.”

Police said there was no indication that Cleve, who was driving the red Audi when he was shot, was in any way involved in the drug trade.
His daughter was being treated at a local hospital for minor injuries, according to the Mail.
The accused killers were only identified by the police as José N., aged 30, and Lenin N., aged 18.

The news of the businessman’s violent death stunned his friends.
“I am shocked, shocked and deeply disturbed by this terrible, terrible news,” friend Kristen Amrhein wrote on Cleve’s Facebook page on Sunday.
“You were the highlight of my trip to Playa and I will miss you my friend,” wrote Amrain. I have always looked forward to our funny exchange and it was an honor to know you. My deepest condolences to your family and your dearest Chloe.”
