In Ukraine, the old Russian tanks for armoring the front lines

The T62s are from the 1960s, they were also used by Moscow in Syria. They are made available to the militiamen to garrison the areas already conquered

A railway train in Melitopol, Ukraine. On board numerous Russian T 62 tanks withdrawn from depots. An antiquated weapon from the 1960s that the Army would have wanted to dust off in order to fuel the campaign with any resources available.

The decision to reactivate these funds has raised various hypotheses. According to Warzone experts, they could be delivered to pro-Russian militiamen, who are usually equipped with not-so-modern systems. Outdated helmets, uniforms, guns tell the story. These fighters would use them to occupy the conquered territories, i.e. H. With subordinate roles. However, it is not excluded that the command will focus on a traditional principle: the quantity, avalanches of funds to saturate the opposing lineup and in some way prolong their defense. We’ll see in days when and if images emerge from the field.

The T62 – experts keep emphasizing this – has significantly inferior characteristics compared to newer tanks, and it is also likely that the conditions of use of these parts will be precarious. In short: do they work enough to handle large movements and battles? During the first weeks of the conflict, many vehicles were abandoned by crews due to breakdowns.

Some observers claim their deployment is a signal of the need to send tanks to the front lines to replace losses over the past few months. In addition, Moscow delivered several T 62s to Syria in 2020, precisely in response to immediate needs. And there are still thousands of tanks in its arsenals.
