This is one of the most striking images since the beginning of the war in Ukraine: a pregnant woman evacuated from a Mariupol children’s hospital after being seriously wounded during a Russian shelling of the facility. According to the Associated Press, the victim and her child, born by caesarean section, did not survive. “More than 30 minutes of resuscitation did not give any results either for the mother or for the child,” doctor Timur Marin told the news agency.
Her pelvis was crushed by debris from the explosion and her thigh was torn off. Doctors at the hospital where she was taken tried to save the baby by performing an emergency caesarean section on him, but he did not survive. The mother’s health deteriorated very quickly, a doctor interviewed by the agency said.
Bombing unanimously condemned
The bombing of the maternity hospital was unanimously condemned by the international community. “We were all shocked by these images of the “affected” maternity hospital in the city center,” Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday ahead of the European summit in Versailles.
The French president denounced the “clear purpose of killing civilians”. As far as we know, the Mariupol maternity hospital “is the third maternity hospital to be bombed out,” the UN spokesman said.
