What should be the theme of the Summit of the Americas? 3:48
(CNN Spanish) — The United States government, through America Summit coordinator Kevin O’Reilly, announced this Thursday that it will not invite the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was questioned, to the meeting.
The confirmation came during a United States Senate hearing, when Republican Senator Marco Rubio asked O’Reilly if Maduro or representatives of his administration would be invited, to which O’Reilly replied, “Absolutely not, no, we recognize them as a legitimate government.” .”
Rubio also asked if Juan Guaidó, whom the United States recognizes as Venezuela’s interim president, would be invited, to which O’Reilly replied that the White House had not yet sent Guaidó an invitation to attend the summit.
CNN has reached out to the Maduro government for a response to O’Reilly’s announcement during today’s United States Senate hearing, but we have yet to receive a response.
This year’s Summit of the Americas will take place from June 6th to 10th in Los Angeles, California.
