‘RS. Marvel Trailer Reveals Muslim Teenage MCU Superhero

That new Ms Marvel trailer Dotted with speech balloons straight out of the comics, it introduces viewers to Kamala, a Muslim Pakistani-American high school student from New Jersey who paints and dreams of one day joining the superheroes she idolizes. Kamala, who was introduced to comics in 2013 and received her own series the following year, was Marvel’s first American-Muslim superhero. seems to serve as her origin story. The Kamala we meet is confronted by sniper classmates who mispronounce her name and make fun of her Avengers T-shirt. She gawks at a shirtless boy at a party surrounded by equally reverent friends. And most importantly, she presents herself as a version of Captain Marvel, a cosmic icon in the MCU.

This dream is pure fantasy until it’s true: the trailer doesn’t show us how Kamala gets her powers or their degree (no spoilers here) – she describes them as “cosmic”.

“It’s not the brown girls from Jersey City that are actually saving the world,” Kamala says at one point in the trailer. But the Ms. Marvel series is likely to prove her wrong.

What enemies will Kamala have to face outside of high school and frighteningly attractive classmates? Will her family find out her super-powerful secret? And when will she be able to join her idol Captain Marvel in protecting Earth from interstellar invaders? (She is slated to appear in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel Marvel.)

The MCU loves slow builds, so chances are neither Kamal nor viewers will get all the answers. Marvel fans have probably already begun to theorize, but they’ll have to wait until June 8, when the show begins streaming on Disney+, to see how Kamala’s story unfolds.
