EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros hosted the lavish premiere of Elvis at Cannes, director Baz Luhrmann’s epic story about the relationship between Elvis Presley and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, that shook the world of rock and roll forever.

The exact date is still unknown, but according to sources, the film is blocked from showing at the Palace. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Austin Butler plays Presley and Tom Hanks plays Parker, the man who discovered the singer and turned him into a world-famous star, taking half of his earnings for his troubles. It’s been in the air for a while, but Deadline can confirm it’s definitely happening.

The film will premiere on June 24 via Warner Bros, and the Cannes screening should give Elvis a head start for the studio, following on the heels of the Batman blockbuster. It will be a huge party for Luhrmann, who learned days before filming began that Hanks had contracted Covid, a seismic event that foreshadowed the closure of all Hollywood filming due to the global pandemic. Hanks was the first major star to contract the virus.

Luhrmann co-wrote the film with Sam Bromell, Craig Pierce and Jeremy Doner and produced by Gail Berman, Katherine Martin, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss.

No comment from Warner Bros., but expect Elvis to be part of the lineup when the festival is announced shortly.
