Free Agency Lions: Detroit extends contract with Caliph Raymond for 2 years

The re-signing of contracts with the Detroit Lions continues. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, The Lions re-sign the receiver and returned Caliph Raymond. According to Dave Birkett, this is two-year contract with Raymond. According to Doug Cayed, the deal is worth “up to” $9.5 million.

Last season was the year of Raymond’s career: he scored 576 yards – almost 400 more than in any other season in his career – and threw four touchdowns (he had only one until 2021). Raymond brought variety to the Lions’ waiting room. While he is best suited for the slot, he has proven himself capable of taking on the role of outsider when the Lions faced injury last season.

Raymond was also the team’s main punt returner. He had 14 returns for 236 yards and an average of 11.2 yards per return, ranking him seventh among NFL returning players with at least 10 attempts.

Raymond joins a fairly competitive rec room that now includes DJ Chark, Josh Reynolds, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Quintez Cephus, Trinity Benson, Tom Kennedy and Javon McKinley. It may be difficult for Raymond to break through offensively as a regular, but his involvement with special teams could give him an edge on a 53-man roster in 2022.
