Meta’s Sheryl Sandberg was under investigation for using company resources to plan her wedding, sources told The Wall Street Journal.
Sandberg announced on Wednesday that she was stepping down after 14 years as operations manager at Meta, Facebook’s parent company. She said she will remain on the company’s board of directors.
“I’m not exactly sure what the future will hold — I’ve learned no one ever is,” the Lean In writer wrote in a Facebook post announcing the news. “But I know I will be more focused on my foundation and my philanthropic work, which is more important to me than ever given how critical this moment is for women.”
Sandberg’s announcement came around the same time the company was reviewing their use of company resources for wedding planning purposes. Sandberg announced in 2020 that she was engaged to Tom Bernthal, the founder and CEO of a Los Angeles-based consulting firm.
The scrutiny, which has been ongoing since May, grew out of another probe into Sandberg after The Journal reported in April that years earlier she had urged The Daily Mail, a British tabloid, to stop reporting on her then-boyfriend Bobby Kotick, the CEO , hired by Activision Blizzard and a restraining order obtained against him by an ex.
Meta didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
Meta spokeswoman Caroline Nolan told The Journal, “None of this has anything to do with her personal decision to leave.”
Former and current Meta employees, Insider’s Kali Hays and Claire Atkinson recently said that Sandberg has gradually lost power at the company.
