Netflix is trying to limit the free sharing of passwords between households

Streaming platform Netflix announced on Wednesday plans to limit the free sharing of passwords between households of different users, starting in three countries in Central and South America.

In a statement Wednesday, Netflix said it would begin testing new ways to have users using an account with different households pay additional fees.

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account with features like separate profiles and multiple streams on our Standard and Premium plans. While they have been extremely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared,” Netflix said in a statement. “As a result, accounts are spread across households, impacting our ability to invest in great new TV shows and movies for our members.”

The streaming service said that members of their standard and premium plans will be able to add child accounts for two people they don’t live with, giving them their own profiles and passwords.

“We understand that people have many entertainment options, so we want any new features to be flexible and beneficial to members whose subscriptions fund all of our great TV shows and movies,” the streaming service added in a statement.

Netflix said it will launch new features in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru in the next few weeks.

“We will work to understand the usefulness of these two features for participants in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world,” he added.

Netflix previously tested a feature that encouraged those who download passwords for free to re-enter their credentials to encourage them to create their own accounts, NBC News notes.
