Yesterday, June 7, famous American actor Matthew McConaughey delivered a lengthy speech at the White House commemorating the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. McConaughey, who was born in Uvalde, where he has returned in recent days to show closeness and solidarity with the families of the victims, showed photos and drawings of some of the children killed and shared their dreams and aspirations. He also showed one of the victims’ favorite shoes, a pair of green Converse All Star shoes, which she was wearing at the time of the massacre and from which she could be identified.
In his more than 20-minute speech, the Hollywood star called for reform of gun ownership laws, calling for more buyer controls and raising the minimum age to 21 for purchasing AR semi-automatic 15s (the type used in the Uvalde massacre). “They are common sense rules, practices and tactics for our nation, our states, our communities, schools and homes. Responsible gun owners – who are themselves licensed to carry a gun – are weary of seeing the Second Amendment (which guarantees the right to bear arms, ed.) regularly abused and distorted by a few unbalanced individuals becomes. These actions are not a step backwards, but a step toward civil society and the Second Amendment,” McConaughey said.
The actor then called on Congress again, urging the parties to put aside political divisions and “reach a higher level” as arms reform should be of bipartisan interest: “We’re in a window of opportunity at this time where where we are has never been before. A window where it looks like real change can happen,” he said. “We want safe schools and a gun law that doesn’t allow bad people to get those damn guns so easily. We need to invest in mental health. We need safer schools. We must limit sensational media coverage. We must restore our family values. We need to restore our American values and we need responsible gun ownership.”
