Dinosaur fossil discovered in Egypt
CAIRO, June 9 (RHC) – Egyptian paleontologists have discovered a fossil of a predatory dinosaur that lived 98 million years ago at Al-Bahariya Oasis, about 370 kilometers south of that capital, the Education Ministry said in a statement researching Egypt.
The team of vertebrate paleontologists from this institution, in collaboration with the Center for Vertebrate Paleontology of the University of Mansoura (MUVP), has found for the first time in Egypt a fossil of the large dinosaur Abelisaurius (which means Abel lizard) The tenth cervical vertebra of the neck of a giant carnivorous dinosaur, according to a MUVP report obtained by Minister of Portfolios Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar.
A predator by nature, this specimen was six meters tall and its appearance was similar to that of the famous T-Rex, as both had tiny arms, deep skulls and huge jaws, in addition to being ferocious, the document details.
The Abelisauridae – known as Abels – lived during the Cretaceous Period (145 to 66 million years ago) and are named after Argentine paleontologist Roberto Abel, who discovered the first of them in his country in 1985.
In 2018, the MUVP discovered a Cretaceous herbivorous dinosaur called Mansourasaurus shahinae, and in 2021 it announced the discovery of a 43-million-year-old half water whale. (Source: PL)
