Macron is the only European leader who has not surrendered

Macron is the only European leader who has not “surrendered” to the United States, Lavrov believes.

The Russian Foreign Minister was particularly enthusiastic about the role of Emmanuel Macron, despite France’s support for Ukraine and the economic sanctions imposed on Russia.

As war tragically continues in Ukraine and France continues to demand a ceasefire from Moscow, Russia’s foreign minister made a startling statement about Emmanuel Macron in an interview with Russian streaming news network RBC.

“Europe is ready to accept the rules of the world order established by the United States in any form,” Sergey Lavrov said. “Finally, there is only Emmanuel Macron, who continues to remind about the need for strategic autonomy for the European Union. The rest of the member countries have already gone to bed before the United States,” the Russian minister criticized.

Unusual remarks

The remarks drew comments in Russia, in particular in the conservative newspaper Vzglyad, according to Courrier International. “It is not customary for Russian diplomacy to talk personally about a Western leader, and even more so in a positive way, even when Western countries are together waging an economic war against Russia,” the Russian newspaper reports.

If Emmanuel Macron has indeed been campaigning for European strategic autonomy since the beginning of his presidency—to no avail—the Russian media have been emphasizing other points since the start of the war that likely seduced the Russian government.

“The Swedish Ikea has closed its stores in Russia, unlike the French Leroy Merlin,” Vzglyad notes, adding that Emmanuel Macron received about fifteen big French bosses so that they would not leave Russia in a hurry, Le Figaro reports.
