The champion of Big Brother Brazil 2021, Juliette Freire, commented on episodes of xenophobia on her social networks last Friday (6/10) that she suffered from her Northeastern accent. The singer is from Campina Grande in Paraíba.
Juliette’s outburst came after singer Duda Beat spoke out about prejudice against Northeasterners in the artistic world. In a video, Juliette shows her anger with comments she receives. “Just reading some comments my folks I’m getting some haters so much I can’t believe it. I swear to you that I won’t get sad. I don’t get sad, some I laugh and others I get angry. xenophobic. There’s a lot about my accent, ‘because she doesn’t neutralize that accent’, ‘because she doesn’t sing the song like it is’.
“You will hear a Northeastern accent in advertising, in big ads, yes! Because we are diverse, we consume other styles of music in addition to forró, in addition to our beautiful culture we sing rock, rap, funk, hip hop, did you know everything? So dear, kiss of light,” he said at the end of the stories on the subject, leaving a message for the haters.

Following the fallout from her stories, the former BBB returned to social media on Saturday (11/6) and did a live on the topic. In that live he said that during a voice test he made sure to “neutralize” his own accent.
“I got there and the first thing I did was go into the studio and someone said, ‘Oh, I just wanted to ask you something. Is there a way to neutralize your accent a bit?” the former BBB shared.

According to Juliette, this example was just one of many others. She also recalled how the Northeast accent is seen caricatured. And he left a message on his network reminding him that there is no such thing as a neutral accent.
