Selena spoke about it on Monday’s Hollywood Reporter’s Awards podcast.

She said that focusing on herself has helped her stand up for her needs, explaining, “It has allowed me to develop a character where I have no tolerance for any nonsense or disrespect,” she said.

Selena and Justin last split in 2018, and he moved on with Hailey Bieber months later.

Though she’s more secure in her place in the entertainment industry now, Selena initially didn’t feel settled after the breakup.

“You know, I obviously went through a really tough breakup and then I was left with questions about my career and where I’m going and what’s going to happen,” she said.

Their situation was further complicated by their lupus diagnosis, which required a kidney transplant in 2017, a year before their split.

“And then my medical stuff kind of kicked in, but on the other hand, I have to be honest, it’s been really good for me,” she admitted.

“It was necessary for me to go through these things, I had a lot of soul searching to do,” Selena continued. “Definitely I haven’t figured out life, but I know I’ve learned so much about myself in that time.”

After the turmoil of her medical struggles and romantic life, the Spring Breakers star isn’t rushing into new relationships.

“I tolerate any kind of discomfort, usually disrespect or whatever, even just unnecessary stuff — it doesn’t take over me anymore,” she said.
