A few weeks ago, the “Palma Beach” initiative was still optimistic. After the Corona crisis, there are many indications of a new, calmer type of tourist in Mallorca. But hope has given way to frustration that drunken tourists will return – they say the season has already been abandoned.

According to businessmen, drinking tourism around Ballermann in Mallorca is even worse than in the years before the corona pandemic. Some vacationers arrive at hotels around 10 am and at 2 pm they cannot leave, quoted the newspaper “Última Hora” Juan Miguel Ferrer, general director of a “Palma Beach” initiative to improve quality in Playa de Palma.

Tourists usually book ten days in advance and stay an average of three or four nights on the Spanish island. They spend just €30 to €40 a day, mostly on alcohol, Ferrer complained. Tourists were still partying until 4am, sometimes using megaphones that would inexplicably continue to be sold freely. In some cases, tourists who were completely drunk were simply left on the street by their friends.

“We already consider the season lost in terms of excess control,” Ferrer told Mallorca Zeitung. Police must also enforce stricter rules on the streets. A few weeks ago, he was still optimistic. Corona acted as a catalyst for his own efforts and attracted a new kind of tourist. They want things like good food with local produce and eco-friendly local transport.

Unfortunately, that positive development came to an end on May 10, according to Ferrer. “As soon as the big party temples opened up again, this new kind of tourist was driven out by the old party crowd,” he laments. “Since then we have suffered from the arrival of large groups of tourists just wanting to get drunk on the streets, on the boardwalk or on the beach,” Ferrer said, according to the newspaper.
