If you thought HBO’s plans for the future of Game of Thrones were in the past by this point, you’re in for a shock: The network plans to bring back Kit Harington’s Jon Snow for a new Thrones spinoff set after the events of the main series.
THR reports that Harington is already involved with the project, albeit only in its earliest stages of development, and would reprise his role as Stark Bastard/Night’s Watch commander/eventual ally of his secret aunt, Daenerys Targaryen. The series would be set after the controversial eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, which ended with Jon murdering Daenerys before she could ascend the Iron Throne after a brief and sudden descent into insanity and being banished from the lands of Westeros travel north beyond the collapsed wall guarded by the Night’s Watch to find new life.
While no further details about the series have been released, the plans mark a surprising development for HBO’s intent to revive Game of Thrones after the main series wraps up. So far, all of the network’s attempts to continue Thrones have focused on the long past of George RR Martin’s fantasy franchise – a scrapped spinoff series was set thousands of years before the events of the series, only to be replaced by what now House is of the Dragon, a similar prequel series that follows the families of House Targaryen a few hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones. Other potential sequels such as an adaptation of Martin’s Dunk & Egg stories are all set firmly in the past of what we know as Game of Thrones, while this Jon Snow idea is the first to go beyond Martin’s long-awaited conclusion to his novels, and into the unknown future of the series.
We’ll bring you more about HBO’s plans for Jon Snow as soon as we find out.
