Democratic Party urges to join drive for prosperity in Lebanon

The Political Council of the PDL stressed in a statement that the naval dispute is a sacred matter for the country on the way to rescuing the Lebanese from the economic and financial crisis.

During a meeting, the political force led by Talal Arslan called for moving away from populism and corruption in order to defend acts of demarcation of territorial borders.

They stressed the need to decide on the southern coast border line as soon as possible to prevent Israel from starting to extract gas from the Karish field between Lebanon and occupied Palestine.

PDL members called for the swift formation of a government that would make bold decisions and implement the reforms desired to halt the ongoing collapse.

Likewise, they advocated a political discourse that emphasizes national sentiment and helps strengthen security stability to help the country’s recovery.

The President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, this week demanded Lebanon’s sovereign right to invest in its water wealth by hosting mediator Amos Hochstein in the dispute against Israel.

Aoun briefed the US diplomat on the nation’s unified position on the demarcation of maritime borders and asked Hochstein for quick responses from Tel Aviv.

Local reports indicate that an oil and gas-rich zone of about 860 square kilometers is disputed between Lebanon and Israel, according to maps filed by the two countries with the United Nations.

At one of the past talks, the Lebanese delegation presented a new map endorsing an additional 1,430 kilometers, which led to Israel’s suspension of negotiations in May 2021.

Part of the currently disputed Karish field is in line 29, which the Lebanese consider to be the southern maritime border, hence the rejection of maneuvers carried out by the Greek exploration platform on Israeli service in the past June 5.

In this regard, Hezbollah (Party of God) secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah insisted that the immediate goal was to stop any Israeli activity aimed at extracting oil and gas from the Karish field.
