US Open Golf 2022 LIVE: Round 3 results and updates – Matt Fitzpatrick leads the way into Sunday

Justin Thomas: It’s sad that LIV Golf is overshadowing the US Open

Matt Fitzpatrick will take part of the lead into the US Open finals as he seeks a first major title and historic Brookline double.

Defending champion Jon Rahm looked poised to end an eventful Saturday at the top of the leaderboard as he bogged down 14th, 15th and 17th to take the absolute lead, only to land a double bogey in 18th . Rahm unluckily hit a fairway bunker with a well-hit drive, but then drilled his second shot into the obstacle and found more sand in front of the green with his third.

The resulting six dropped the Ryder Cup star to three-under, a shot behind Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris at four-under, who had weathered the blustery conditions to shoot 68 and 67, respectively.

Rory McIlroy’s chances seemed to be dwindling quickly as he covered his first seven holes in three over par to slip five behind world number one Scottie Scheffler, who potted from 102 yards for an eagle on the eighth hole to reach six under.

However, Scheffler hit a double bogey on the short 11th hole and dropped more shots over the next three holes, while McIlroy birdied the 11th and relied on a brilliant display of putting to take the lead despite a disappointing 73 in sight to keep .

Home favorite Keegan Bradley is a two-under alongside Scheffler and Canada’s Adam Hadwin, while the group at the one-under includes Sam Burns and Joel Dahmen alongside McIlroy.

US Open 2022: Third round

Joel Dahmen has a birdie shot at 18, but he misses and he’s settling for 74. That’s a fighting round off the start he had and leaves him at -1, just three shots from the lead.

Meanwhile, a disaster for Collin Morikawa as he shoots 77 and falls to +7, a tie for 17th place. Not what he had in mind when he went into the lap as the leader.

US Open 2022: Third round

All Rahm can do from the greenside bunker is jab the ball past the hole and he probably left himself 20 feet to save bogey.

Zlatoris and Fitzpatrick will lead the US Open heading into Sunday and in the final group, but will Rahm also be at -4 or drop to -3?

He sends his putt down the hill, but he always stays to the left. It’s a DOUBLE BOGEY! A round of 71, he falls back to -3 and he’ll be a shot behind Fitzpatrick and Zulatoris. He will be in the penultimate group with Keegan Bradley tomorrow.

VIDEO: Jon Rahm can’t get out of the fairway bunker…

An 18 nightmare for Jon Rahm. That hole caused problems all day but that’s bad from the defending champion

Jon Rahm’s drive at 18 finds the left fairway bunker but rolls back far enough to give it a shot.

Oh no! He misses the ball and it bounces off the edge of the bunker and rolls back to his feet. disaster for cream.

Another try for the defending champion. He’s out this time, but it’s sand to sand… He’s in the front green bunker and the ball looks congested. That could easily be a double bogey…

Putt for McIlroy from about 20 feet for birdie. He’s putting putts on that back nine for fun and sending it down, but he’s drifting just right.

It’s still par, an incredibly battling round of 73 and he’s at -1. That will be four or maybe just three behind the lead depending on how Rahm finishes on 18.

Aaron Wise, playing alongside McIlroy, fails to save the par from 30 feet. His putt slips and he taps in for a bogey, falling back to +1 for the championship. 75 for the round and his chance of winning seems gone.

This is a recreation of McIlroy. He can wedge his second at 18 and has his eyes on the green.

He twirls in a terrific shot that keeps getting better and better to the delight of the crowd. He’ll have a birdie look to get to -2 which would be a tie for fourth place…

Rory McIlroy is in trouble again, this time at 18. He drives way to the left and it will be interesting to see what kind of lie he has/how he falls
