Key moments in Hulu’s Deep Water prove Vic’s greatest enemy wasn’t his sinister wife Melinda or the town’s nosy writer Don.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Deep Water, which is available now on Hulu.
In Hulu’s Deep Water, Vic (Ben Affleck) has faced some enemies in his troubled marriage. And it took center stage around his sinister wife Melinda (Ana de Armas), who kept tormenting him with her infidelities, and Don, a writer who kept trying to prove Vic had an affair killing his wife, Charlie. But while Vic was able to bypass them all and gaslight the people of town to stay clear, when his downfall came he turned out to be his own worst enemy.
It became evident in the finale when Vic lost to Tony because of Melinda’s ex. Realizing that she still loved the construction magnate and was possibly planning to elope, he lured him to the ravine where the family often picnicked. Vic then killed Tony and went home to bask in victory with his daughter Trixie.

Tony’s disappearance worked in two ways, because while he wouldn’t be there to physically meet Melinda, there was also a psychological effect. He left her once, and by “leaving” her again, she would realize that Vic was the only man who would stick with her through thick and thin. And it happened because Melinda thought Vic would love her despite her flaws, want to reconcile, and have a happy family again.
And everything was fine until she went to Vic’s weird snail breeding hut, where she found a trophy: Tony’s wallet. When Vic dumped Tony’s body in the river, he took out the wallet so it would be difficult to identify the body. Unfortunately, he never destroyed it, and Melinda was horrified. She was embarrassed because although she thought Vic would kill for her, she never really thought he would do the deed. And on top of that, it confirmed Vic drowned Charlie and shot Martin, which urged Melinda to pack a suitcase to leave.

Vic’s murders reiterated how badly he had gambled because with Charlie’s death, he became emotional as they were alone in the pool, choking and drowning the young man. It was premature because Vic could have risked exposing himself when the coroner determined the cause of death. After all, no one was in the pool but them, and all the guests knew that when they exited the water. And it was precisely this stupid attitude that allowed Melinda to find the wallet and initiate her husband’s downfall.

I am a former chemical engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, TV, movies, and basically anything nerdy. I also write about music related to punk, indie, hardcore and emo because they rock! Now, if you’re bored, you don’t want to hear that I write on the PR side for ESPN. And yes, I wrote sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, right? To top it off, I have written short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and screenplays from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. Finally, let me remind you that the geek will inherit the earth. Oh, FYI I’d love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That means I’m on Twitter @ Renaldo Matadeen. So howl.
