Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday President Biden has undone the stability achieved in the Middle East under the Trump administration by attempting to secure a new nuclear deal with Iran, the region’s single biggest threat.
Pompeo appeared on Sunday Morning Futures to address the challenges the Biden administration is currently facing ahead of the president’s visit to Saudi Arabia, where some say Biden is hoping for help in dealing with skyrocketing gas prices and confrontation with to look into the Iranian nuclear weapons program.
Pompeo said that the Biden administration “set a signal” when it made the decision to break away from the Abraham Accords and return to the “crazy” nuclear deal with Iran, resulting in higher American energy prices and “the made life worse for every American.”
“The stability that we built in our four years has now just been wasted and thrown away,” he said. “You put us all in danger.”

Pompeo said that while the Biden administration hopes to appease Iran, it’s possible the Iranians could close the Strait of Hormuz and push energy prices even higher.

Attempts by the Biden administration to secure a nuclear deal with Iran could also affect relations between the US and other countries in the region, according to Pompeo.
“If you side with the Iranians, if you side with the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism, against Israel and against Saudi Arabia and against the Emirates,” Pompeo said, “these leaders of these countries have no faith more to the United States, and the chance that they will put in a solid performance for Joe Biden is extremely slim.”

The former secretary of state said that while he was “glad” that Biden’s visit recognizes the need for more energy in the market, he wonders why the president went first to Iran, Venezuela and now Saudi Arabia instead to energy producers in the US such as Midland, Texas and Pennsylvania.

“The President of the United States will have to take responsibility and change direction,” Pompeo said. “He shows no signs of it. He’d rather lash out and tell the American people, ‘Don’t believe your lying eyes.'”

Despite the Biden administration’s renewed interest in finalizing a new nuclear deal with Iran, discussions over Iranian demands, including removing its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from the State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations, have stalled.
The US withdrew from the JCPOA under former President Donald Trump for reasons including the deal’s limitations on preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon in the long term and a failure to address certain issues such as Iran’s ballistic missile program.
