Montevideo, 20.06. (Prensa Latina) The president of the Uruguayan union Pit-Cnt, Marcelo Abdala, reiterated that the class struggle here is intensifying as a result of the project of the ruling right-wing coalition.
He expressed that the increase in mobilizations by workers and various social sectors to defend their rights is a reflection of this.
Abdala offered this insight into the situation in the country on the occasion of the second anniversary of the alternative audiovisual information and analysis medium Legítima Defensa, which emerged from the weekly magazine Caras y Caretas.
He recalled that the Pit-Cnt characterized the current Uruguayan government as “commanded by class, particularly by the large bourgeois faction that profits from the exploitation of our natural resources, agribusiness”.
The union leader specified that in the midst of a pandemic, when the executive “enjoyed a particular climate due to the pandemic, we chose as a tactical link to open all these struggles to join the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) with unity represent the people”.
In this regard, he pointed out that although not enough votes were obtained to overturn the 135 articles of the LUC, “there was a positive balance from the point of view of militancy, struggle and activism that left us at a higher level of the accumulation of forces”.
He believes this is recognized even by the President of the Republic himself, when he calls together the coalition’s political leaders and tells them that “we asked for the center of the ring and we need to take the initiative and make sure there are changes.”
For Abdala, “this flight forward has an answer that is with struggle, one day yes, one day too, the trade union and popular movement will take to the streets, raise their flags, defend their rights, social security, collective bargaining and central.
He added that these were defensive reactions, but they had the perspective that they would lead to a large people’s congress promoted by the union headquarters, where the program and the organization would be defined, which would be able to offer a sustainable alternative to the to change things in the country.
