It’s official: the supernatural prequel series The Winchesters has found John and Mary.
The CW announced Monday that Drake Rodger (The In Between) has been cast as John Winchester, the man who would eventually father Sam and Dean. Despite being a widowed hunter on the OG show, the upcoming series will feature a much younger version of the character. “Recently returned from Vietnam, selfless and level-headed John Winchester finds a new mission back home, where the trail of his father’s past leads him to a secret organization and a whole new war as a hunter,” reads the official description.
Meanwhile, Meg Donnelly (American Housewife, ZOMBIES) will play the boys’ future mother, Mary. At 19: “Mary Campbell has fought the forces of darkness since she was a child. After losing someone close, the hardened Slayer considers leaving the family business – until the disappearance of her father and the arrival of newcomer John Winchester forces her to lead a new team.”
In Supernatural, Matt Cohen and Amy Gumenick portrayed John and Mary as young adults, while Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith played the couple as adults.
Told from the perspective of their eldest son, Dean Winchester (narrated by Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters promises that “An epic, untold love story about how John met Mary and how they risked everything to save not only their love but the whole world.”
Supernatural’s Robbie Thompson will write and execute the future series. Jensen Ackles and his wife Danneel Ackles will also serve as executive producers as part of their overall deal with Warner Bros. Television on their Chaos Machine clapboard.
Glen Winter, who produced Arrowverse shows Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, will helm the pilot.
