Max Verstappen survived a late attack by Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari to seal his maiden Canadian Grand Prix win, extending his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship to 46 points.
After a late safety car – caused by Yuki Tsunoda hitting the barrier at turn 2 on lap 49 – Sainz was able to pit and had the tire advantage over Verstappen for the remaining 16 laps. But Verstappen was almost flawless, holding off the Spaniard to seal his sixth win of the season. Lewis Hamilton took his second podium of the year in the Mercedes in P3 ahead of teammate George Russell in fourth.
Charles Leclerc recovered from P19 in fifth, ahead of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso in sixth and seventh. Alfa Romeo duo Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu finished eighth and ninth at their home race, while Lance Stroll completed the top 10.
