- In a video message broadcast on Sunday evening, the President of Ukraine said, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expected “major enemy Russian activity” within the week. “And not only against Ukraine, but also against other European countries,” he says cryptically. He specifies that the Russian army is “building up forces in the direction of Kharkiv and in the Zaporizhia region” after hitting a Ukrainian fuel infrastructure.
- The Ukrainian army said on Sunday it repelled Russian attacks on nearby villages Sievierodonetsk, in the east of the country, where the belligerents have been at war for weeks. For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that “the offensive against Sieverodonetsk is taking place[ait] with success”. For its part, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) evokes “minor gains” by Russian forces in the area.
- While the European Commission recommended at the end of the week that Ukraine be granted candidate status for the European Union, his opinion will be discussed on Thursday and Friday at a European summit for Kyiv to officially receive this status.
- NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has warned that Western countries must be ready to make an offer long-term support in Kyiv. The war could last “for years”, he warned in an interview published on Sunday in the German daily newspaper “Bild”.
- The German and Austrian governments, which at least have Green ministers, announced on Sunday that they would take immediate measures to secure their energy supplies because of the recent drop in Russian gas supplies. This means in particular increased use of coal and the restarting of power plants. A political turning point for Berlin and Vienna, which have promised to phase out coal by 2030.
