The death of a famous New York City singing coach, who fell and cracked her head after being pushed during an unprovoked assault, has been ruled a homicide as the manhunt for the suspect continues, police said Monday.

Barbara Gustern died Tuesday, more than two weeks after a woman approached her from behind and pushed her just before 8:30 p.m. on March 10, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) said. Police said Monday they were now treating her death as a homicide.

Gustern, 87, was in the West 28th Street and Eighth Avenue area, less than a block from her Manhattan home.

The shock caused her to fall and hit her head, leaving her with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Gustern was taken to a nearby hospital but ultimately could not be saved.

NYPD detective chief James Essig called the attack “an unprovoked, senseless assault” and a “disgusting and shameful offense.”

“This is horrible. An 87-year-old woman walking down the street knocked to the ground,” Essig said at a news conference last week.

Gustern was a longtime vocal coach who, according to the New York Times, has worked with Broadway performers and music stars, including “Blondie” singer Debbie Harry.
