UNITED NATIONS, March 21 (RHC) The use and good stewardship of groundwater may be the solution to future water crises in the world, says a report presented Monday by the UN at the ninth World Water Forum.
The 2022 Water Resources Development document noted that the 1 percent annual growth rate in use of the precious water and its scarcity due to climate change will increase reliance on subterranean currents, which make up 99 percent of the planet’s water
Groundwater can bring social, economic and environmental benefits to societies such as: B. Adaptation to climate change, as it accounts for half of the volume withdrawn globally for domestic use and about 25 percent for irrigation, to irrigate 38 percent of the entire land.
Despite its importance and potential, this natural resource is underunderstood and underestimated, polluted, mismanaged and overexploited, with irreversible consequences, said UNESCO DirectorGeneral Audrey Azoulay.
He warned that these bad practices are having a devastating impact, urging governments to stop ignoring the enormous potential of these waters in the face of what could lie ahead, and to develop strategies to manage them sustainably to protect themselves to face crises today and in the future.
