Remaining free agents in line with the Chicago Bears’ current approach

General manager Ryan Powles doesn’t make many friends among Chicago Bears fans due to his rather lenient approach to free agency. His only attempt at anything close to a splash was Larry Ogunjobi, but it failed due to a failed physical. Since then, the Poles have limited themselves to a series of small moves. All of them have one thing in common. They check three boxes of keys.

  • Junior side (28 and under)
  • Ascending
  • Inexpensive

It is clear that the team is not looking for win-win options. They are risking smaller names in the hope that they can continue to grow. This is a typical approach for a team entering a recovery phase. With that in mind, there are a few more names that might fit the profile of what Chicago is looking for.

The Chicago Bears Are Watching Or Might Be Watching These Guys

Auden Tate (WR)

By the end of the 2019 season, the Cincinnati Bengals looked like they and Tate had a potential breakout star in the making. That season, the former 7th round pick had 575 yards in just 12 games. Unfortunately, his progress was undermined over the next two years by health issues and the rise of other teammates, including Ty Higgins and, of course, Jamarr Chase. The guy is only 25 years old, and he is a tempting 6-foot-5 target with strong arms for nimble throws.

Ryan Bates (OG)

A name the Chicago Bears already know. They plan to meet with Bates on Tuesday in hopes of signing him. It’s not hard to see why. The young blocker has been amazing in 2021 for the Buffalo Bills, playing in several different positions from left tackle to both defensive positions. He dominated the left-back position, allowing four pressures on Josh Allen in six games. This guy can scratch the surface of what he can do. Outdoing Minnesota and New England for his services can be tricky.

Tavon Young (CB)

It was a surprise when the Baltimore Ravens released the 28-year-old guard. Young has established himself as one of the best slot cornerbacks in the NFL over the past couple of seasons. His physical style of play and flair for football make him perfect for the type of defense that Matt Eberflux wants to manage. The Tampa 2 scheme largely depends on this particular position. Kenny Moore proved it in Indianapolis. Yang will have other suitors, but don’t rob the bank.

Ronnie Harrison (S)

The Bears have stated that they need physical players. Harrison has no problem with this role. He liked to succeed in Alabama and later in Jacksonville and Cleveland. His versatility often stood out, playing well both in cover and as an additional blitzer. The trick is to get him to play under control. Alan Williams should be able to help with that. Harrison can be that combinational defender who gets into the box, allowing Eddie Jackson to do what he does best in midfield. In terms of skill set, he is as close as the Bears have been since Adrian Amos left in 2019.
