Matthew Lawrence Responds to Cheryl Burke’s Filing for Divorce and Requests End of Spousal Support

Dancing with the Stars pro Burke first announced their divorce after nearly three years of marriage in an Instagram post last month.

Exactly one month after Dancing with the Stars star’s Cheryl Burke filed for divorce from husband Matthew Lawrence, the Boy Meets World alum responded with a filing of his own last Friday.

Both parties cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split, which Burke said began on Jan. 7, according to TMZ. In his reply via E! News, Lawrence has requested that spousal support be ended for both parties and the May 2019 marriage contracts maintained.

Like several other “DWTS” romances over the years, Lawrence and Burke met during the show, but not because Lawrence was a contestant — at least not this Lawrence.

Burke and Lawrence first met in 2006 when his brother Joey Lawrence was on the show’s third season. The couple began their romance in 2007 and dated for a year before going their separate ways and finally rekindling their love affair in 2017.

Just a few years later, in May 2019, Lawrence and Burke married. Burke has been very public about her struggles with alcoholism and abusive relationships. She said in a video posted to her YouTube in December 2020 that it was Lawrence who broke her pattern of being in abusive relationships.

Burke also revealed earlier this year that she was two years sober after quitting alcohol following her engagement to Mathews in 2018. She opened up about her journey of addiction and sobriety alongside peloton coach Cody Rigsby on the final season of “Dancing with the Stars,” in which she placed third.

Back in 2020, the couple spoke to Us Weekly about how they’d managed their relationship during quarantine as they celebrated their one-year anniversary during the pandemic.

“The first year was great. I mean, that was like, it definitely tested us. Not just that, but everything,” Burke revealed at the time. “We were also in the process of moving, but of course that has to be put on hold now. But we’re in the same boat as everyone else and as long as we all just stay home and obey, I think, the rules and the quarantine, I think this whole process will be a lot quicker if we all stay at home for a few more weeks can stay.

In their joint interview, Lawrence also spoke about the importance of communication and mutual exchange. “If you stop that communication and don’t try every day, things start to fall apart. I think that’s really important,” he said.
