“This is really the beginning of the end for her,” says Chrissy Metz of the latest episode of This Is Us, which may finally reveal how Kate and her husband Toby (Chris Sullivan) are splitting up.
Since the beginning of the final season of the time warp drama, Toby has been working at a startup in San Francisco, flying back to Los Angeles to spend the weekends with music teacher Kate and their two young children. “They realize their happiness is in two different places, and that’s really difficult,” says Metz.

On the March 22nd episode, Kate – who viewers know will marry fellow colleague Phillip (Chris Geere) in the future (sort of!) – visits Toby at the City by the Bay. They both desperately want to get back together, but fate has other plans. “An incident at Toby’s company party not only brings Kate back to reality, but also makes her wonder what’s most important to her,” Metz suggests.
The hour the actress co-wrote includes recaps of Toby and Kate when they met, as well as a scene she says gave her stomach cramps: “It’s a dork. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to shoot with [Sullivan].”
Still, Metz sounds excited about what happens next. “We’ve seen Kate slowly but surely coming to her senses. This is a catalyst for a new way of life.”
