The Carolina Panthers apparently won’t compete in the market with the top three picks in the 2018 draft.

David Newton of ESPN.com reports that Carolina is not interested to the Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, first pick four years ago.

They already have quarterback Sam Darnold, the third pick in the same draft. Both players have $18.8 million guaranteed contracts for 2022.

The Panthers are desperately looking for a quarterback. Their lack of interest in Mayfield means that they do not believe he is one of them or that he can become one.

Or maybe they just got tired of kissing frogs in the hope that they would become franchise quarterbacks. This is an expensive and yet fruitless habit.

They have a hard time attracting a well-known franchise quarterback. And not in vain. Coach Matt Rule enters 2023 in the hot seat, as evidenced by his inability to hire a more experienced or desirable offensive coordinator than Ben McAdoo. Your best bet is to pick a quarterback and hope he becomes a franchise quarterback either under this regime or the inevitable next one.
