Brawl breaks out during Miami Beach spring break celebrations as mayor and residents say ‘enough’

Footage of a violent skirmish between spring breakers in Miami Beach comes after city officials called for a curfew to curb the gun violence and general chaos that has gripped the city in recent days.

The 41-second video appears to show three separate fights taking place on 10th Street, a predominantly residential strip that intersects with busier streets like Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive on Saturday night.

A woman in a blue mini dress repeatedly punches a woman while another woman restrains her. A few feet away in another fight, a woman hits her arm and torso several times, while a third woman pulls her hair.

The hand-to-hand combat that allegedly took place on Friday night is just one example of the chaos that reigns in the beach town at this time of year.

Over the past four weeks, 100 weapons have been confiscated and five people were injured in two separate shootings over the weekend, despite the presence of 371 police officers.

On Monday, city officials announced a curfew for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, residents have been reporting rowdy visitors on social media, with one person declaring, “You should all pack up and go home.”

Since then, Miami Beach officials have imposed a curfew for the coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday to prevent similar violence in the island city of about 90,000.

The curfew will apply in the area between 23rd Street and South Point Drive, according to the Miami Herald. The cars will not be turned away, instead the police will focus on ordering the crowd back to their hotels or leave.

“In the past two nights, five innocent people have been shot dead on our streets,” Mayor Dan Gelber said Monday afternoon.

Regarding the spring break crowd, he stressed, “We don’t ask for it, we don’t promote it, we don’t encourage it. We just tolerate it.

City manager Alina Hudak declares a state of emergency, allowing her to impose a 72-hour curfew unless city commissioners vote to extend it.

A review of the commissioners’ social media pages shows that most of them seem to agree with the new restrictions.
